Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities

So in doing my research for this project, I have found the term "metropolitan universities" popping up everywhere I look. In an interview with President Caret of Towson University, he relayed that "metropolitan universities have a responsibility and a mission to serve the communities in which they reside." In an effort to find out more about metropolitan universities and the activities that they sponsor I began my search directly at the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) website. This coalition includes universities from across the country as well as seven other institutions around the world that are located in urban and metropolitan areas that have a mission to help the community. It so happens that Caret is the current president of CUMU. The annual conference this year is being held in Baltimore from October 20-23. This is a perfect opportunity to find out how universities develop ideas concerning aid to the communities they are in. The session tracks vary from community partnerships to K-16 partnerships to Strategic Planning/Institutional Engagement to Service Learning/Civic Engagement & Student Programming/Development. There are nearly 70 different workshops throughout the course of the conference that help the attendees learn different ways their university can interact and help the community around them. I am eagerly awaiting the conference so that I can learn how universities across the globe are helping the community around them.

This post was very interesting and you displayed great research skills. I was surprised to find that Caret is the president of CUMU. It both impresses me and disappoints me. I'm impressed that he is the head of such a worthwhile organization but disappointed that I hadn't found out sooner. I feel like this type of information should be common knowledge to a Towson student like myself. Caret's staff should do a better job publicizing his community involvement. Also, Caret himself should put more effort into getting Towson students involved in the community.
